IGNITE!
A variety of after school enrichment programs comprise the NCCS Ignite program. The courses are an extension of our approach to developing life-long learning skills. Students have unique opportunities each semester to enrich their learning experience. These courses are taught by teachers, friends, family members of students, and community members.
Classes include:
- Green Team
Our Green team learns and conducts hands-on activities about sustainability, recycling and repurposing, Green School practices, and educating other students on these topics. The Green Team activities include learning about chicken husbandry and our NCCS flock. The team meets weekly to collaborate, develop, and implement environmentally conscious practices within our school and community.
- Student Government Association
The SGA is an advisor-guided but student-centered organization developed to allow students to take an active role in improving and helping the entire school community. The student body elects officers. All members participate in SGA activities.
- Business Club
In this club, we will explore basic budgeting skills as organize and run our very own NCCS school store.
- First Lego League Club
The First Lego League Club engages in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering. The club is based on building and programming a LEGO® Education SPIKETM Prime Robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. They also design an innovative solution to a real-world problem relevant to the theme.
- Express Yourself Through Art
Children love to make art! Here is an opportunity for them to do several projects after school. What better way to finish a school day than with a captivating and calming art project? The options are endless! Let’s paint a picture as Michelangelo did...UPSIDE DOWN! How about making a tiny house that you can paint and wallpaper however you want? They will have the opportunity to work with a special clay to create people for their house. One of the projects will be making animals out of felt. Your child will learn so many techniques and be exposed to art in a whole new way!
- NCCS Cheer Club
The Ignite cheer class participants learn fundamental cheerleading skills, including cheer motions, jumps, cheers, chants, and a dance. Practices include team building, games, and cheering, and girls will be required to wear socks, athletic shoes, and no jewelry.
- School Rock Band
This band learns instrumental songs to perform in the winter and spring music concerts. Rehearsal happens during lunch twice, weekly. The band will have a beginner and advanced group, both with requirements and auditions. This program is free to all NCCS students.
- Rhythm Changes Rock Band
The Rhythm Changes Rock Band program features outside performances in the local community with the
Rhythm Changes non-profit organization. Students can expect multiple shows throughout the year, with a modern approach to song choice. The Rhythm Changes Rock Band course is billed separately from the NCCS tuition.
- Private Instrumental Lessons
For students interested in having private one-on-one music lessons, we offer weekly instrumental lessons. Students can bring their own instrument or borrow one from the school.
Prior to each semester, NCCS reaches out to community members who are passionate about sharing their professions and lived experience with our students. Generally, the first Ignite course runs from mid-September - mid-January; and the second course runs from late January to late May. If you are interested in teaching a course, please reach out for more details! We want to hear from you!
